What is acupuncture ?

Acupuncture treats the body as a whole, not only the disease-At Physical, Mental / Emotional & Psychic / Spiritual level.

It is an ancient art of healing developed over thousands of years.
It works by stimulating the flow of Vital Energy & eliminating all toxins
from the body. It is done by stimulation of specific energy points called
  acupuncture points on the body.
No medication is used. Its effect is lasting and fully curative. It is not
  symptomatic as in Modern medicine.
Acupuncture can be done without needle-Laser, Electro-Acupuncture,
  Ultrasound, Moxibustion, Cupping.
Acupuncture is not a substitute of conventional treatment, rather it
  compliments it.
It is
  - Preventive (as it slows down aging process and tones up the body).
  - Curative in chronic diseases as it gives lasting cure by rectifing energy
     imbalance.
  - First aid in Emergency conditions, e.g. (in shock, epilepsy fit).

History of acupuncture-

It dates back to 2000 years ago when in china, a warrior in battlefield after being injured in foot by an arrow was cured of a recurring headache which he was having for long time. This led physicians to think of some connection between feet and head being connected by energy channels or meridians. Thus 12 meridians corresponding to 12 organs, were discovered.
So far vital energy (Qi, Prana, Ki) flows unobstructed in it, one is in good health, any obstruction in flow of Qi either due to excess of climatic factor- wind, heat, humidity, dryness, coldness depending on the season adversely affect the flow Qi leading tophysical ailment-migraine, arthritis . Emotional factors-anger, overjoy, anxiety, depression, fear also block the flow of Qi leading to stress related disorders-Depression Insomnia.
In India, 2000 yrs. ago, Sushruta mentioned 107 vital points (marma) in ayurveda. In ayurveda also there is mention of soochi shastra (needle therapy). Ear and nose piercing for the treatment of asthma was known for ages.
Blood letting is still being used for the treatment of sciatica. People were aware of 89 acupuncture points on Asian Elephants, that is how the "Mahaut" could control the elephant with an iron probe.
It was in 1972, Nixon visited China and brought this science to western world, which led to integration of acupuncture with western medicines and also led to the invention of acupuncture without needle, Electro acupuncture, laser acupuncture, ultrasound acupuncture etc.
