Obesity |
| |
The increase of body weight due to deposit of fat if exceeds 10% - 20% of the standard body weight, it is called overweight / obesity. The obesity can be divided into the endocrinal, metabolic (diabetes, thyroid disorders) and simple (including the constitutional and overeating) types. Psychological disturbance (Stress & tension) is the most common cause, leads to overeating, Water retention is common in ladies after childbirth.
In traditional medicine, it is considered related to the dysfunction of spleen, stomach, kidney and sanjiao (triple warmer). |
| |
|
 |
Hazards of Diabetes |
| |
(Obesity means excessive body weight): |
| |
• This imposes unnecessary strain on the body’s various physiological systems, especially
the heart, circulatory, respiratory and eliminative systems |
| |
• Predisposes the person to development of many serious metabolic diseases including
diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and arthritis. |
| |
• Leads to lowered vitality, mental dullness and depression |
| |

Treatment of Obesity |
| • |
Acupuncture & Acu-Yoga is very effective in most cases of obesity by releasing stress & inhibit the gastric emptying, eliminate hunger sensation and suppress appetite, releasing water retention.
Simple obesity responds very quickly, while endocrinal /metabolic obesity takes bit long time, hormonal imbalance also gets rectified gradually it is done by stimulating homeostatic and hormonal acupuncture points it stimulates metabolism and thereby enable the body to utilize food efficiently instead of storing it as fat.
It clear stomach heat, adjusts function of stomach, strengthen spleen, tonify kidney and eliminate dampness. Mostly of acupuncture points of stomach, spleen, kidney and triple warmer are used. Ear acupuncture is especially effective and embedding needles are retained in 1-2 of the following points for 5 days: shenmen, Hunger points, Stomach, Large intestine, endocrine, lungs, heart and Sanjiao. |

Acu-yoga: Almost all cases of obesity will return to normal body weight and an inspired life if a daily acu-yoga program is followed with determination. The problem is that individual needs inspiration and willpower. |
| |
• The tense overeater benefits especially from yog nidra(deep relaxation). He habitually
sits to eat with a tense, preoccupied mind, takes an enormous meal without really
relaxing, tasting and enjoying it at all. He should learn to relax for 10 minutes in
shavasana before each meal, relaxing his mental preoccupations and his digestive and
other bodily organs. |
| |
• On the other hand the bored overeater should be initiated into karma yoga, some mode
of self-expression which will get him or her out of the kitchen, out of the house, away
from the constant temptation of food and into some more stimulating and useful activity.
As other interests awaken, food obsession will fall away. |
| |
|
| • |
Diet: Some diet modification should be practiced (Low salt, Low sugar, oily food to be avoided) Eat slowly after chewing well, eat less than your need, Dinner to be taken two hours before sleeping, Eat fresh foods and vegetables avoid water during meals, Avoid animal fats, rich dairy products, hydrogenated oils, fried, fatty food, avoid deep frying and re-frying, low salt in diet, bakery products ( Cakes), spicy food. |

Diabetes Mellitus |
| |
Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications; people with diabetes can take measures to reduce the likelihood of such occurrences. |
| |
|
| 1 |
Types of Diabetes: |
| |
(Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus IDDM) |
| |
Risk factors are less and well defined in type 1 diabetes than type 2 diabetes. But auto-immune, genetic, environment factors are more involved in the development of this type of diabetes. Usually develops during first 40 yrs. of life body weight normal or underweight, severe symptoms develop if treatment with insulin withheld. |
| |
|
| 2 |
Diabetes |
| |
(Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus NIDDM) |
| |
90-95% accounts for this type of diabetes. Risk factors are old age, obesity, and family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and race/ethnicity.
A diet high in refined, fiber-depleted carbohydrates is believed to induce diabetes in susceptible genetic types, while a high intake of high fiber, complex carbohydrate-rich foods protects against the development of diabetes.
Obesity is another significant factor as 90% non-insulin dependent diabetes types are obese. Weight loss alone can correct all the abnormalities. 90% diabetes do not need insulin, can be controlled with oral anti diabetics. |

 |
Symptoms |
| |
Symptoms is called Silent killer as it may be symptomless, General weakness, loss of vitality , fatigue, loss of weight is very common , Increase appetite, thirst, frequent urination ,sometimes patients presents as acute emergency diabetic coma
Diagnosis is done when one goes for blood sugar test during routine medical check up
Complication of Diabetes are more important - Arthritis it starts early in diabetes especially involving knee & lower back Obesity, Hypertension can lead to Brain stroke ,Heart attack , Kidney failure, Eyes–diabetic retinopathy, early cataract, Diabetic neuropathy (paraesthsia in feet and hands ,burning sensation in soles ) impotency , Gangrene in feet. |
| |
|
 |
Treatment |
| |
• Diet - should not exceed more than 1600 –1800 calories per day they should have a normal
weight. |
| |
• Acupuncture treatment has a good regulative effect on disturbance of endocrine
function, disorder of metabolism and blood circulation in diabetic patients. Acupuncture
not only acts on blood vessels, nerves and bio-chemical alteration of active substance
but also has fairly good efficacy of facilitating the cellular depoluerization and reducing
the viscosity of blood. |
| |
• This efficacy can carry out the purpose of “promoting blood circulation and resolving
stagnation and prevent complication of diabetes Acupuncture and moxibustion enhance the
sensitivity of insulin receptor of Beta cells to glucose, increased the secretion of insulin and
accelerate the usage and the transformation of glucose thereby reducing the elevated
glucose levels. |
| |
• Young patients (Juvenile diabetes) responding very well to acupuncture there by
requiring lower and lower dosage of insulin . Its was observed that success rate was
relatively less in cases associated with hypertension, heart disease ,retinopathy. Research
has shown that acupuncture can play a role of improving the micro-circulation
disturbance of severe diabetes mellitus thereby helping in cases associated with Cardio-
Vascular and Cerebral-Vascular disorders. |
| |
• Acupuncture / Acupressure helps to control diabetes by stimulating following acupuncture
points - GB 21 –( located at highest point of shoulder), Li 11 –( on outer side of elbow
crease) , St 36 – (4 fingers below knee on outer side) , Sp 6 –( 4 fingers above ankle on
inner side) , Liv 3 – (3 fingers above web between 1st and 2nd toe) |

| |
• Do moderate exercises, Walking |
| |
• Walking is the most beneficial exercise for diabetics, walking, running and swimming
helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The risk of heart disease is
two to four times higher in diabetics than in the general population. |
| |
• Walking helps to circulate blood in each and every tissue of the body, Restores joint
mobility and develops immunity, Develops sexual stamina, the brain gets fresh air which
helps concentration, another benefit of walking is that it dissolves the adipose tissues
and one becomes slim by burning fat. |

Sex and Diabetes |
| |
• Most of the diabetics suffer from erection problems after the 30’s. If there is no erection
during sleep, then it is called diabetic impotence. Poor blood circulation to the genitals

Health Tips /Precautions |
| • |
If parents suffer from diabetes it is likely that their children will be the victims of this disease due to heredity. Otherwise also, children imitate parents’ lifestyles and are likely to have some of the problems of their parents in future because of identical lifestyles. |
| • |
Heredity is one of the most important factors for diabetes. Children should be taught good eating habits so teach them to eat fruits and to avoid junk food , should not exceed more than 1600 –1800 calories per day they should have a normal weight. They should also have adequate exercise to be able to digest the food they eat. Overeating during pregnancy may increase the risk of diabetes for the baby later in life. |
| • |
GOUT - It is a metabolic disorder of unknown cause leading to increased uric acid in blood as a result of poor digestion and a weakened colon. There may be positive family history. |
| • |
It causes inflammation of the joints and swellings of a recurrent type. Middle-aged men and women post menopause are most affected. There is painful, tender, hot and swollen big toe. The affected foot cannot bear weight and even wrists and knees maybe affected during the acute stage. The attack occurs during mid-night or early hours of the morning. |
| • |
Loss of appetite and slight fever are other symptoms. They may generally lead to formation of kidney stones. |
| • |
Acupuncture along with acuyoga can very effectively cure it. |
| • |
Diet restriction e.g. tomato, spinach, pulses, meat are important. |
| • |
Carrot, cucumber & beet juice is beneficial. |
| |
|
 |
Thyroid Disorders |
| • |
Hyperthyroidism is over activity of thyroid - There is loss of weight, palpitation, tremors in hands, Palpitations, Heat intolerance, Nervousness, Insomnia, Light or absent menstrual periods, Fatigue, Hair loss. |
| • |
Hypothyroidism is under activity of the thyroid gland that leads to inadequate production of thyroid hormones and a slowing of vital body functions. Hypothyroidism is common, especially among older people, particularly women; it affects about 10% of older women. It can, however, occur at any age. Usually only one blood tests (T S H) is needed to confirm the diagnosis. |
| |
|
 |
Causes |
| • |
Primary hypothyroidism results from a disorder of the thyroid gland itself. |
| • |
The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. |
| • |
Asthethyroid is gradually destroyed, hypothyroidism develops. |
| • |
Sub-acute thyroiditis and silent lymphocytic thyroiditis can both cause transient hypothyroidism. The hypothyroidism is transient because the thyroid is not destroyed. |
| • |
Hypothyroidism can develop after treatment of hyperthyroidism or thyroid cancer because use of radioactive iodine or drugs that interfere with the body's ability to make thyroid hormones or surgical removal of the thyroid gland leads to a lack of thyroid hormone production. |
| • |
A chronic lack of iodine in the diet is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in many developing countries |
| |
|
 |
Symptoms |
| |
Insufficient thyroid hormones cause body functions to slow. Symptoms are subtle and develop gradually. They may be mistaken for depression; especially among older people More than 10% of older people have some degree of hypothyroidism Women are affected about twice as often as men.
Facial expressions become dull, the voice is hoarse and speech is slow, eyelids droop, and the eyes and face become puffy. Many people with hypothyroidism gain weight, become constipated, and are unable to tolerate cold. The hair becomes sparse, coarse, and dry, and the skin becomes coarse, dry, scaly, and thick.
Acupuncture treatment; Is very effective in both hyper and hypothyroidism, mainly hormonal and homeostatic points are used combined with Acuyoga it can give much faster and better results. It not only brings thyroid profile to normal but also prevents complications of hypothyroidism. |
