Headache |
| |
It is caused primarily by tension in muscles in Head, Neck, and Shoulders leading to deficiency of Qi to brain which could be due many causes: |
| |
|
| |
Migraine headache : Is a serious problem and presents with pain which is mild to severe, throbbing, bursting type, on side or top of head relieved by vomiting, there may be increase in thirst, bitter taste, scanty urine, severe giddiness.
There is no cure in modern medicine, while acupuncture is treatment of choice and is curative |
| |
|
| |
Diet |
| |
An excess of salt or sugar-both widely found in modern processed foods-can cause headaches. They cause gross imbalances in the system when taken in excess. Salt has contracting effect that accentuates tension. |
| |
• Sugar has a toxic, expanding effect that can cause throbbing in the head. |
| |
• Monosodium glutamate (found in Chinese restaurant food) can cause headaches. |
| |
• Cocoa (and chocolate) and coffee can aggravate headache or precipitate a migraine
attack. In particular, an excessive consumption of coffee is a frequent cause of chronic headaches. |
| |
• Intake of sour food –pickles, sauce, chatni |
| |
|
| |
Emotional Stress |
| |
Emotional causes are extremely frequent causes of headache - anger, frustration, resentment and pent-up grudges, worry, fear, excessive mental work e.g. Long hours of reading / working at computer strain the eyes and lead to headache. |
| |
Ladies (daughter in law) in joint families are generally under lot of stress all these cause the rising of Liver-Yang of Liver-Fire which is cause of migraine headache. |
| |
|
| |
Stomach Problems |
| |
Hyperacidity, gas formation, indigestion, constipation – Due to irregular food habits, sedentary life style are very common cause of migraine. |
| |
|
| |
Other causes of headache |
| |
• Cervical spondylitis, sinusitis, refractive error of eyes |
| |
|
 |
heath Tips |
| • |
Combination of migraine, cervical spondylitis, and sinusitis is very commonly seen and can be effectively cured by acupuncture and acuyoga (pranayama and yognidra). |
| • |
Diet –avoid Chinese food, sour food, take “ loki “juice on empty stomach if you feel hyper acidic |
| |
|
 |
Epilepsy |
| |
|
| |
Symptoms |
|
• Fit is common on or around Purnima (full moon day or Amawasya due changes in
the magnetic field of the earth). |
| |
• In some cases sour eatables or anger precipitate the attack. |
| |
• Epilepsy is generally hereditary. If so, it comes on in early childhood.
- Other causes
are birth trauma, by anoxia due to difficult labour, head injuries, brain tumours,
meningitis or encephalitis and cerebrovascular disease. |
| |
|
| |
Treatment |
| |
• Acupuncture reduces frequency of fits and adverse effect on brain avoided , dose of
medicine gradually withdrawn .In children fits & medication both retard mental
capability in studies ,their memory etc. |
| |
• Acupressure on Du 26 ,Live 3, St 40 , K 1 which gradually reduce frequency & intensity
of fits. Mental capability and memory can be improved |

Parkinson's Disease |
| |
It is degenerative disease; there is impairment of movement, rigidity and tremor, which results from damage to the basal ganglia. There are biochemical changes leading to diminution of dopamine a transmitter substance. As a result, the cholinergic system is relatively overactive; it causes tremor and rigidity, common at 50 to 60 year age. |
| |
• Tremors in the hand |
| |
• Difficulty in movement |
| |
• Rigidity

Prognosis and prevention |
| |
Acupuncture can control and its progress and reverse to some extent .Any person over 50 who suddenly develops symptoms such as dizziness, stiffness, and an increasing difficulty in walking, Should change their life-style by working less, taking more rest, avoid emotional stress (by yognidra) and reduce sexual activity. |
| |
|
 |
Multiple Sclerosis |
| |
Is degenerative disorder, whose exact cause is unknown .It affects 1 in 2000 population in Britain, but in India it’s incidence is far less. It affects young individuals, has a long course and causes disability at the prime of the life. Exact cause is unknown, environmental, genetic and immunological factors are suggested. Invasion of external Dampness is an important cause of disease in the beginning stages.
This is contracted by living in damp places, sitting on damp grass, failing to dry oneself after swimming; it is an interesting finding that many patients suffering from multiple sclerosis have given a history of an acute onset of attack during or immediately after swimming.
There is partial destruction of the myelin sheaths around the spinal cord, brain and optic nerves, symptoms depend on the location of the lesions. Because the lesions can partially heal, this disease goes through characteristic phases of remission and relapse.
In young people the first presenting symptom is often retro bulbar neuritis causing blurred vision, whilst in old people it is weakness of a leg.
There is no cure in modern medicine; generally these patients are talking steroids which should be gradually tapered off. Acupuncture can offer considerable help in alleviating its symptoms and slowing down progress eliminating the feeling of heaviness and tingling of the limbs and in facilitating walking. The earlier the treatment is started the better the results. If the patient can continue walking; one can expect good results. |

Motor Neurone Disease |
| |
The condition is degenerative, progressive and ultimately fatal. Male Female ratio is 4:1. The noted age is 45-60 years. It affects the motor neurone of the spinal cord, brain stem and motor cortex. The symptoms depends on part of brain involved-weakness of arms ,legs , difficulty in speech or swallowing, There is no cure in modern medicine , by regular acupuncture treatment, the progress of the disease is retarded in majority of the patients. In some patients the disease remains stationary while in few cases the disease may be reversed.
These are hereditary disorders in which there is progressive muscular weakness without any involvement of nervous tissue. The cause is unknown
It is of following types: |
| |
• Pseudo-hypertrophic (Duchene type) - It is commonest and worst type, it is mainly
disease of male, rarely females, women can be carrier of this disease. It starts around
age of 5yr; he complains of falling while walking, then he cannot get up without
support, he ascends his own body if he changes position from sitting to standing. |
| |
• Limb girdle type - It starts in adolescence with wasting of shoulder muscles, while
muscles of forearm and lower limbs are well preserved. |
| |
• Prognosis is not as bad as Duchene type. |
| |
• Facio-Scapulo humeral type - It is slow progressing late onset between 20-40 years.
He is confined to wheel chair 20-30 years after onset |
| |
|
 |
Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation |
| |
If child is brought before age of 6 years, good progress is possible, as after that development of brain is complete, much improvement may not be possible. It is caused due to difficult delivery (commonly due to less oxygen to brain), illness during pregnancy, Hereditary.
According to TCM cause is deficiency in the liver and kidney, insufficient qi and blood. It is treated in the patient’s liver and kidney to regulate qi and blood which would eventually strengthen the function of the brain.
Laser Acupuncture is the stimulation of selected Acupuncture points with a low level laser (soft laser). In this method of therapy, the points are exposed to laser radiation for 10-25 seconds, and the whole treatment may take only 5 minutes to complete, it is pain free and 100% aseptic.
Scalp Acupuncture which is based on the physiological function of different brain areas, as studied in conventional medicine; different scalp zones were stimulated with needles in order to stimulate the reflex-related nervous tissue. On the basis of these studies it was possible to localize scalp zones that related to specific parts of the brain. EEG measurements in patients undergoing Scalp Acupuncture allowed changes before and after Acupuncture to be recorded. It was confirmed that stimulating the overlying scalp tissue can stimulate the underlying brain tissue.
Ear Acupuncture - Stimulating brain related points and affected parts of body also helps in faster recovery. |

Cardiovascular Problems |
| |
Stroke is one of the important cause of adult disability in the world the risk of stroke can be reduced by increased awareness of stroke risk factors and warning signs. The incidence of stroke is becoming common in young because of ignorance, they may be having high blood pressure, high level of stress and high cholesterol level. |
| |
|
| |
What is warning sign of stroke? |
| |
• Sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side
of the body) |
| |
• Loss or difficulty in speech |
| |
• Sudden severe headache with no apparent cause.
Unexplained dizziness |
| |
• Loss of balance/coordination |
| |
|
 |
Muscular Dystrophy |
| |
Risk control measures |
| |
|
| |
Control Blood Pressure |
| |
• High blood pressure (hypertension) is the single most important risk factor for stroke;
blood pressure should be 120/80. |
| |
• Treatment of hypertension in older adults is also important. However, in elderly
individuals, an abrupt fall in blood pressure may actually cause a stroke. |
| |
• Therefore treatment of high blood pressure in the elderly may need to start with small
doses of medication, so that blood pressure is reduced gradually. |
| |
|
| |
Exercise regularly |
| |
• The percentage of fat in our bodies tends to increase with age. Regular exercise
helps keep this increase to a minimum.
Reduce stress. |
| |
|
| |
Stress may increase blood pressure |
| |
• It is linked indirectly to stroke risk. A onetime stressful event rarely causes a stroke, but
long term unresolved stress can contribute to high blood pressure |
| |
• Stress management, including relaxation techniques (yognidra), exercises, and massage
could be the excellent form of treatment to reduce stress |

Paralegia / Quadriplegia |
| |
Paraplegia is a disturbance of neural function caused by either transection or compression of the spinal cord. |
| |
|
| |
Causes |
| |
• Accident or trauma can cause severe injury to spinal cord. |
| |
• Inflammation of the spinal cord. |
| |
• Tumour of the cord or metastases. |
| |
• Disseminated sclerosis, demyelinating disease. |
| |
• Tuberculosis of the vertebrae leading to deformity of the vertebral column. |
| |
• Severe lumbar canal stenosis may lead to Para paresis. |
| |
• Complication of laminectomy. |
| |
|
| |
Clinical Features |
| |
• Paralysis of both lower limbs (Paraplegia) and four limbs (Quadriplegia) depending on
level of spinal cord involved. |
| |
• Hypoesthesia or anaesthesia of lower limbs. |
| |
• Incontinence of stool & urine. |
| |
|
| |
In Paraplegia, Quadriplegia special care must be taken to avoid formation of bed sores, contractures, urinary infection, and faecal impaction etc., Physiotherapy can be additionally advised.
We also recommend meridian massage on the affected parts; results are very encouraging muscle power of legs restored to great extent with urine & stool control regained, if patient comes in early stage. |
